Martin Luther said the above mentioned statement because of the following reasons:

  • In 1517, he wrote about 95 theses criticising the rituals, practices of Roman Catholic Church. His theses was very popular among the common people, which was possible only because of the printing technology
  • The translation of 'The new testament' sold 5000 copies within a few weeks, which influenced a large section of people to go against the spiritual heads and despotic rulers. It created a new culture of debate and discussion, people arise questions based on rationality and reasons.
