Upon returning home after attending the ball, Matilda discovered that the diamond necklace that she had borrowed from Mme. Forestier had gone missing. Inspite of searching in the folds of Matilda's dress, in the folds of her cloak as well as in her pockets, the necklace was nowhere to be found. They thus incurred that the necklace must have fallen off on the carraige that they had come home in. Thus, in order to search for the necklace Matilda's husband had to go out in the cold night in order to track the cab.
