why did micheal fail in rescuing sebastian shultz in first time ?

In the first game, Wild West, Sebastian Shultz met Michael for the first time. As the real objective of the game was to fight with Black Eyed Zed, the fastest gunner in the town, Michael could not understand the presence of Sebastian in the game. Therefore, when Michael and Sebastian were on the horse escaping the other horseman, a bullet hit Sebastian and he died.

In the first game michael didn't knew what was happening in the game. As per he had read the instructions the game was not the same. He was confused what to do. Then suddenly when he saw that there was a another player like him in the same story. That is two heroes in the same game. So quite confused he followed the instruction of the second player which he failed to do
