Montesquieu advocated the separation of powers because he thought this would avoid placing too much power with one individual or group of people.
Explanation:
- It was his idea of dividing the governmental powers into three branches which get popularised with the onset of time. He separated them equally yet with different responsibilities and functions. This process he thought would avoid placing much power in one individual or group.
- It also prevents the concentration of power and ensures checks and balances so that the functioning of the governing body could be proper and maintained. It also limits one particular branch from practicing the core functions of another in a legal way.
