Mahatma Gandhi started his non cooperation in January 1921. It was started mainly due to the following reasons;
1. Khilafat movement - The first world war ended with the defeat of the Ottoman Turkey. There was a rumor that a harsh treaty was going to be imposed on the Khalifa. To defend the power of The Khalifa a Khilafat committee was formed. Mahatma Gandhi saw this as great method to unite the Muslims and the Hindus. Hence during September 1920 it was a Non-Cooperation movement in support of Khilafat movement.
2. After World War I - During the WW1 there was a huge increase in defense expenditure and war loans. Prices increased and crops failed. Villagers were called upon to supply soldiers and this created anger. Freesom was promised and many political leaders were released. But after the end of the war India wasn't given freedom and hence this added up to a reason to start non cooperation movement.
3. Jallianwala Bagh incident- This was a huge massacre done by General Dyer in Jallianwala Bagh on 13 April 1919. This created widespread anger among the people and hence it motivated them to start the movement.
4. Rowlatt Act- This gave the government the power to imprison a person without a trial. It was passed in 1919. This made the people angry. Under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi they decided to launch a Non cooperation movement.
5. To get Swaraj- A free and self dependent was the dream of every Indian. And hence to get Swaraj this movement was started.
