Mrs Dorling had all the precious belongings of the narrator’s family. Even the green cardigan that she was wearing belonged to the author’s mother. She was shocked to see the narrator as she thought that no one had returned after the war. Mrs Dorling understood that the narrator wants her belongings back. She had no intention of returning them. Therefore, she showed no sign of recognition and refused to talk to the narrator.
