Mrs Hall was convinced that her guest was an eccentric scientist. She was prepared to excuse his strange habits and irritable temper. The reason was quite simple. Griffin had paid her in advance. He had even gave her some gold coins, and at first he said that he was expecting a cheque at any moment, as he had no money at the time. Soon after the robbery at Mrs. Hall's inn, he proceeded with ready cash to pay for his stay. She was curious to know why he preferred solitude.
