Answers
Answer:
Mrs. S gave her valuable household articles to Mrs. Dorling because the war had broken out. Hitler’s army was hunting down the Jews. The narrator and her mother were Jews. So, they had to be ready to run away to a safe place any time. Mrs. Dorling came in this situation offering help to them. She offered the narrator’s mother to take care of their belongings. So, one by one she took all the valuable things such as cutlery, silver, crockery, antique plates, etc. to her home.
Mrs. S was not able to take her belongings back from Mrs. Dorling back because before the war was over, she passed away. After the war, when her daughter the narrator went to get her mother’s belongings back, she did not treat her properly. She seemed to be reluctant to return those valuable belongings. So, the narrator decided to forget them as the belongings would remind her of her deceased mother.
