Mrs Slater scolds Victoria quite a few times during the play. At the beginning of the play she scolds her for appearing so normal just at the time when her grandfather is lying dead upstairs in his room. She reprimands her for gallivanting about in the street. She asks her to change her frock and wear the mourning dress before her uncle and aunt arrive. Second time she scolds her when she expresses her happiness over her grandfather being alive.
