Mrs Slater asked Victoria to change her dress from colourful to black because according to her the grandfather was dead and it would be a shame on their parts if Victoria would remain in the coloured clothes and also her sister was also visiting them so to outshine them she wanted that all her family members should be in all black morning

Mrs. Slater asked Victoria to change and wear her blacks. She asked so because Grandfather Abel Merryweather had been found dead by then and Mr. and Mrs. Jordan were soon arriving . If they saw her in colours, it would create a bad impact of Slaters in the Jordans.
