The Mughals did not believe in the rule of primogeniture (inheritance). Instead they followed the Mughal and Timurid custom of coparcenary inheritance. It is a division of the inheritance amongst all the sons. Mughal princes rebelled against their fathers, overthrew them and captured power.

The Mughals campaigned constantly against rulers who did not accept their authority. With a rise in their power, many rulers voluntarily joined them, e.g. the Rajputs. Many Rajputs married their daughters into Mughal families. This enabled them to secure high positions.
