Nana Saheb was close to the Britishers before the revolt. During the revolt It was planned by Nana Sahib that he would assemble a force of 1,500 soldiers to support the British, in case the rebellion spread to kanpur.
But when Nana and his forces entered the British magazine, the soldiers of the Infantry, who were guarding the magazine, thought that Nana had come to guard the magazine on behalf of the Company. However, once he entered the magazine, Nana Sahib announced that he was a participant in the rebellion against the Company, and intended to be a man of Bahadur Shah II.
That's why he earned the title "Villian of the revolt".
