• The Balkan was a region of geographical and ethnic variations comprising of modern-day Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro. The inhabitants were called Slavs.
• The spread of romantic nationalism lead to its disintegration. One by one, it's European subject nationalities broke away.
• Different Slavic nationalities struggled to define their identity and Balkan region became a region of intense conflict over expansion of territory.
