•Balkan was an area of great ethnic and geographical diversity.
•It comprised of modern day Bulgaria,Romania,Macedonia,etc....
The inhabitants were known as slavs.
•Boost in the spirit of nationalism by widespread use of Romanticism and disintegration of the Ottaman empire drove the way for revolts of independent state.
•The Balkan states grew jealous of each other and wanted to acquire as much area as possible under their control to show their superiority.
•This came up with Big power rivalry as the powerful nations such as Britian,Austro-Hungary,and Germany wanted to acquire the Balkan Peninsula as it was of great strategic importance.
•This led to wars between the nation's which later developed as First World War.
Hence these are the reasons why nationalist tensions emerged in the Balkans.
