Nehru who is known for his idealistic behavior has a member in founding NAM in 1961.By this he choose to not align to any one of the bloc in the cold war between them.The years 1947-1964 can be termed as early cold war period .Since india just achieved its freedom from british who left with partition , poverty, illiteracy,famines,nehru in view of these chose not involve in cold war.
USA : Nehru did not favor capitalism,though he admired FDR attempts at regulating economy.He believed that racialism and colonialism are causes for WWs.All these impacted in his relations with USA.Initially india did not incline to neither of countries.But the change in ruling parties have influenced this inclination.Before 1953 when democrats were in rule ,US sent experts,equipment to help india's agricultural programmes.After 1953 the rift was deepened ,republicans did not like concept of neutrality.The Indian stand on Vietnam war,USA supporting Portugal's claim on goa,USA's military pact with pakisthan (later joining SEATO ).all these bittered their relations.
USSR: Nehru being influenced by soviet economic system has implemented 5 yr plans.Though initially the relations were frosty ( because of raising CPI in india).post 1951 USSR was first to send food grains to india,Indian efforts in medieating korean conflict was appreciated,establishing steel mills and hydro electric plants ,accepting india's claim on kashmir all these have neared USSR to India.
