It took four months to write a new Constitution for the United States. It had to be approved by at least 9 of the 13 states to come into force. It took 10 months for the 13 states to ratify the document. Delaware was the first to ratify it in December 1787. It was followed by Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island.
