Why did nicola and jacopo remain shabby although they earned enogh

They earned money by doing different small jobs . They didnt spend money on themselves but they spend money on their sister Lucia who was suffering from tuberculosis.

Though Nicola and Jacopo were earning a lot of money from the numerous numbers of jobs they did,they did'nt spent it on themselves. They were spending that money on their sister Lucia's treatment, who was suffering from tuberculosis of spine.
