why did nicola and jacopo worked hard ?

There was no one left to help their sister other than the two brothers Nicola and Jacobo. So they worked all day and saved the money for their sister's treatment. They did not even want any sympathy of other people, because they wanted to work on their own and get the money. So through this we can say that they wanted their sister to recover and sing again and also they were ready to hard work
