The narrator had offered the two boys a lift in his car till Poleta. Nicola was not happy with the offer because he did not wish to take any favours and did not want the reason of their visit to be revealed. Thus, Nicola refused to the narrator's offer. However, Jacopo being the younger brother wasn't as serious as his brother and readily agreed to take the lift. This made Nicola furious and he glared at Jacopo.
