None of the characters in the poem "The Cold Within" shares the wood he has because of their prejudiced outlook. Their prejudice is based on the race, religion or other discriminating factors like financial status. While the first one holds herself back looking at a black among the group, the second one doesn't want to help anyone except his church congregation, and there was none in that group. The third one is very poor and he hesitates to do anything for the rich when he sees a rich man sitting across him. On the contrary, the rich man refrains from helping as he doesn't want to help lazy and shiftless poor. The black man is embittered because of the injustice meted out to him by the whites and finds it a good opportunity to avenge his insults. The last one is too calculative to help anyone without any gain. Hence each of them presents a specimen of a man infected with bias, jealousy, greed, and revenge.
