Nicola was self respect man and he didn't wanted to help from anyone in free and he doesn't distrub anyone for his work.

the boys were dignified and self reliant .They did not want anybody to pity on them. They wanted to clear their responsibilities themselves, that is why they were non-commital when the narrator offered them help. Nicola and Jacopo were saving their earnings to emigrate to the US . And plus they did not wanted to reveal their sister Lucia to the narrator.
