why did pandit jawaharlal nehru proclaimed the dams as the temple of modern india

By that time the Jawaharlal Nehru is the Prime minister, India is the new born democratic nation. The new five year plans were introdused to India. And that five year plan mentions to build many Dams, to irrigate lakhs of acres in India.Therefore he mentioned Dams as the Temples of modern India.
