In my opinion under the ryoti system the ryoti were forced to cultivate indigo in their own field. If they don't do that then the planters forced the cultivators to sign up a contract named, satta by which they get the seed and drills for planting and the other things were done by own by cultivators. The another problem was that if once indigo was planted on a field then ,the field became useless and infertile.
