Earlier Religion of Muhammad was  Hanifs – native Arabs of pre-Islamic time professed a strong monotheism – are also sometimes listed along with the  Jews and Christians in the pre-Islamic era of  Arabia, although their historicity is different among scholars.

According to Muslim tradition, Muhammad himself was a sect of  Hanif and one of the follower and descendants of Ishmael who was the son of Abraham.
