Although the tribals who were wandering lived in portable tents, most of the people living in the inlands of the UAE built wooden fences around their permanent traditional homes.

The idea behind building these fences was nothing more than safety. The UAE is a country which has a highly male-dominated society and almost all the decisions are taken by men. It becomes the responsibility of the man of the house to safeguard his house, his people and his belongings from outsiders and offenders. So, to protect their women, their children, their valuables, the livestock, etc, the men started building fences around their homes. These fences were first made from wood or from mangrove tree poles and later they started using stones and gravel.
