The priests divided people into four groups, called varnas. The priests also said that these groups were decided on the basis of birth. Many people did not accept the system of varna laid down by the brahmins. Some people felt that there should be no differences amongst people based on occupation.

The Brahmins were the ones who divided people into 4 groups, known as Varna’s or the caste system. These groups were decided upon birth. The first were the Brahmins which were the priests, teachers and protectors of sacred learning across generations. Next were the Kshatriyas. They were associated with warrior hood. Then came the Vaishyas. They comprised mainly of the merchants, landlords and trade professionals. The last were the Shudras. They were considered of the lowest caste. They included of the artisans, labourers and servants.
