Why did people started jumping into Wells when it was open fire at Jallianwala Bagh​

On April 13, 1919, at Jallianwala Bagh, the British armed forces under the command of General Dyer opened 1,650 rounds of fire at the people gathered for a peaceful protest, killing hundreds of men, women and children trapped inside the garden. Many jumped into a well to save themselves from the hail of bullets.

The only gate was closed or blocked by the britishers and there was no other way except to jump into the well to save themselves and little did the know that they would die even if they jump into the well.
