Pi being a castaway does not want to stay alone in the ocean.
He uses the principle that some kind of company is better than being alone in a remote land.
He sees Richard Parker trying his heart out to save his life and stay on the ocean's surface.
As an act of mercy, Pi saves the life of Richard Parker.

Sharing the boat with Richard Parker was definitely tough for Pi.
Pi realizes that he needs to keep the animal alive so that he can protect himself from being eaten by him.
It is this realization which makes Pi decides on trying his best to keep Richard Parker alive and train him for his own selfish requirements.
