Why did primitive men choose caves and river beds as areas for leading a settled life?

The land along the rivers is fertile. If there is fertile land, then crops can be grown. Animals can also be raised if there is enough food and water for them. People learned that they could stay in one place and grow enough food to feed their community, if they were near a water supply.
And also other reason is that at the beginning of human civilisation there was not adequate irrigation and water storage facilities by man at that time.
Other thing is that the transportation through water becomes very much easier then compared to land at that time because land route is quite dangerous, it comprises of wild forests and animals.
