Why did professor gaitonde go to town hall

He went to Town Hall because there was a library housed in it. He wanted to do some research in the history. He had been experiencing a unique experience in which history was different from reality. So, at the library he wanted to read five volumes of his own written books. He found the history to be correct up to fourth volume; but in the fifth volume history was different. It stated that battle of Panipat had been won by the Marathas.
