During the succeeding Mamluk rule, Qutb ad'din Aibak had to rely on maintaining Delhi as a base to fend off attacks from his Khilij rivals from the east as well as rebellious Afghan rivals from the west.

All this saw Delhi becoming a base for economy as well military purposes. It became a trading hub, a drop off point for caravans and travelers, as well as a residence for Sultanate nobles. With all this going well, succeeding rulers continued using the city as a capital and its importance only grew as time went.

Answer:

Qutubuddin Aibak, crowned himself the Sultan of Delhi in 1206, when Muhammad Ghori was killed in the battlefield. After his death when Aibak came to throne, he ruled over those places where he was appointed as the local receiver-general of Sultan Ghori.

Before that Prithviraj ascended to the throne of Delhi, he built Qila Rai Pithora here. His whole life was a continuous chain of bravery, courage, chivalrous deeds and glorious exploits.

So Delhi was already a prominent Kingdom and was picked due to its establishment and riches as the capital of the empire.
