Answer:

Whether you have read Ramayana or not, this is a known story to everyone that Ravana kidnapped Sita. ... The most important reason was the revenge of Ravana's sister Surpanakha. She was humiliated by Rama and Laxmana which later resulted in cutting off her nose. As a brother, Ravana definitely could not tolerate the act.

Question:-

Why did Ravana kidnap Sita Mata?

Answer:-

There are many versions based on this story. Some stories say that Ravana wanted revenge for the insult caused to his sister Shoorpanakha. Some reasons say that being a devotee of Bhagwan Shiva, he could not lift the Shivdhanush and was humiliated at the Swayamwara of Sita Mata.

But the reason why Ravana abducted Mata Sita is given below and it is according to Srimad Valmiki Ramayana published by Gita Press Gorakhpur. (The below explanation is brief and not detailed)

Shoorpanakha had lusted for Shri Rama and proposed to him. But Shri Rama politely rejected her proposal as he already had a wife and was devoted and loyal to her. She was insulted as her nose and ears were cut by Lakshmana in self-defence as she tried to attack Mata Sita to fulfil her desire of getting Shri Rama. Unable to bear the insult of his sister, Khara tried to take revenge on Shri Rama along with his 14,000 demon army from Janasthan but failed leading to his death and his brother Dooshana's too. Ravana wanted revenge against Shri Rama for destroying the forces of demons from Janasthan and for the death of his two brothers. So he decided to abduct his wife who is Sita Mata, thinking that he will become weak after he is separated from his wife. But he drops the plan of abducting Shri Rama's wife Mata Sita after getting discouraged by Maricha. But he confirmed his plan of abducting Mata Sita later after his sister Shoorpanakha lied about getting Mata Sita, who was the most beautiful woman that time, for her brother Ravana (where the truth was Shoorpanakha herself lusted for Shri Rama). Ravana was such a terror, that no woman could escape once he had lustful intentions for that woman. So Ravana thought, by abducting Mata Sita first he would avenge his brothers' death at hands of Shri Rama and second he would get the most beautiful woman in this world that is Mata Sita. So that is why he did what he did.

Note:-

Having a lustful eye on someone's wife or abducting her are grave sins one can commit.
