Robespierre banned slavery because he was against slavery and believed in universal suffrage, equality, equal political rights regardless of color. He opposed the royal veto, the abuses of ministerial power, racial discrimination and privileges.
He supported and welcomed the Declaration of the Rights of the man and of the Citizen. He said, "We should not compromise the interests humanity holds most dear, the sacred rights of a significant number of our fellow citizens." Besides there were also a delegation which petitioned for abolition of slavery during his time and thus National convention passed a decree banning slavery on 4th February 1794.
