In the 16th century, there was a miller named Menocchio who had reinterpreted the holy message that was conveyed through the Bible. He read a lot of books which changed his thoughts about God. He started talking about these books and their views to everyone. These actions enraged the Roman Catholic Church and they tried very hard to repress these negative ideas. Finally, they executed Menocchio.
However, the word had already spread and people started having doubts regarding the faith and the actions. They thought that the books played an important part in Menocchio having these adverse ideas about Catholicism. So, they stopped and restricted many publishers and controlled the booksellers from selling all the books which questioned their faith.
To keep a tag of these, the Roman Catholic Church from 1558, started maintaining an index of all the prohibited books.
