Lushkoff was not willing to work because he was not fit. He was hungry, felt cold and was under the influence of alcohol. He agreed to chop wood for Sergei because of his pride and shame. He was trapped in his own words.

Answer: Sergei was a good and a kind-hearted lady whereas Lushkoff used to drink heavily and he was very weak in his physique. He was so weak that he was unable to hold a piece of log properly or cut the woods. The health condition of Lushkoff was not good at all and Sergei being kind felt very sorry for him.
