As soon as  the Civil War ended in 1865, thousands of Americans began to move towards west to settle the land and the great movement of settlers continued for around forty years. At that time the great empty West became fully settled. The discovery of gold had already started with the great movement in California.

Men had rushed to the gold fields in the hope if they found gold , they became rich and even a few found gold but the others found only hard work. During this process their money was gone then they gave up the search for gold. But they stayed in California because they wanted to become farmers or businessmen.

That is the reason settlers continue to head west even the gold and silver is disappeared.
