They were forced, and many converted to save their lives.
Most of them converted during Aurangzeb's reign.
So I'm talking about what he did.
Aurangzeb was a religious bigot, he forbided everything that wasn't part of Islam. He gave up on wine(rare, probably the only Mughal emperor). He banned music and dance in his court. He refused every customs that he thought was borrowed from Hindus.
He banned Holi, Dussehra and Diwali celebrations. He demolished Hindu temples. No new temples were built during his reign. He stopped worship at the Hindu temple of Dwarka.
Hindus were not allowed to occupy high administrative jobs. Later a general order prohibiting the employment of the Hindus was passed.
He reimposed the pilgrimage tax on the Hindus. Hindus were ordered to pay double of the tax paid by the Muslims. He imposed Jizya which was worst of all, it charged lump sum amount on Hindus.
This was a part of anti-Hindu policy of Aurangazeb. He gave an option that any Hindu could escape from Jizya by becoming a Muslim.
Hindus felt so inferior, and no wonder a large number of Hindus were converted in this way.
