The educated Indians wanted to end the backwardness of country . They mistakenly believed that the British rule would help them accomplish this tasks of modernization while rebels, led by old rulers and chieftains and other feudal elements, would take the country backwards. That is why modern educated Indians did not support or take part in revolt of 1857.
Only later did the educated Indians learn from their experience that foreign rule was incapable of modernizing the country and that it would impoverish it and keep it backward.
