Sri lanka witnessed a civil war because the conflict between the sinhalis and the srilankan tamils. the conflict started because

1. the sinhalis government passed a law in 1956 to recognize sinhala as the only official language thus disregarding tamil.
2. the government had preferential policies that favoured sinhalis applicants  for government jobs and university positions

3)the new constitution stated that the state shall protect and foster buddhism.

all these measures coming one after the other increased the feeling of alienation among the srilankan tamils. they felt that none of the leaders of the major political parties were sensitive to their language and culture. they felt that the constitution and the governmaent denied them equal opportunities in getting government jobs , denied them equal rights and ignored their interests. this thus stained the relationship between the sinhalis and the srilankan tamils.
