This was a time when Lord Krishna was a king. So Sudama's wife asked him to go to Lord Krishna for help, knowing that He would help. He hesitated first, but she pressurised, stating that the children are starving. So he took some flattened rice with him, which is Lord Krishna's favorite, and went to His castle.
