Skin scarred, want a change in your look? The re-modelling of any portion of the body that has been damaged and deformed can be corrected by a surgery known as "Plastic Surgery".
The deformity could be a result of an injury, burns or maybe birth. The principal objectives of plastic surgery are the correction of the defects, rectification of the malfunction and also improvement in the appearance.
In the field of surgery, Hindus are known to have accomplished the topmost skill in all antiquity. "Susruta", a renowned doctor, is known to have mended a nose some 26 centuries ago. This gives us an idea how advanced we Indians were compared to the rest of the world.
They say that once late night Susruta was woken up by a desperate knock on the door. When he opened the door he saw a traveller who needed his help. He saw the man had blood flowing from his disfigured nose. He got up and told the traveller to calm down. He led this stranger to an orderly and clean room, which had various surgical instruments.
Susruta washed the travellers face with water and medicinal juice. Then he offered him a mug of wine and began preparing for the surgery. He got a leaf from his garden and measured the size of the nose and then cut a strip of flesh from the travellers cheek, using a knife and forceps. The wine helped him numb his senses. After bandaging the cheek, Susruta transplanted the flesh to the disfigured nose. He then moulded the flesh into shape. He also sprayed some powdered liquorice, red sandalwood and the extract of Indian barberry. He enveloped the nose in cotton, sprinkled some refined sesame oil and finally put a bandage. Before the traveller left, he was given instructions on what all precautions that he had to take and also a list of medicines and herbs he was to take regularly.
What Susruta did, is not very different from what a plastic surgeon would do today. In fact, Susruta is recognised as the "Father of Plastic Surgery" all over the world. His medicinal knowledge is compiled in a book called the "Susurutasamhita" which is still referred to by people of the medicinal background.
