Taplow called Crocker Harris a hardly because when Taplow had asked Mr.Harris if the latter had given him a remove, his reply was that he had given Taplow exactly what he deserved. No less; certainly no more. This made Taplow feel that he may have marked Taplow down, rather than up, for taking extra work. This showed that Mr. Harris is extremely strict in nature which in turn made Taplow regard him as a hardly human.

The insensitive reply of Mr. Crocker compelled Taplow to call him hardly human.
Explanation:
- The story ‘The Browning Version’ authored by Terence Rattigan is a story of an infamous school teacher who faced failure in career and in his married life too. He was called as ‘Hitler’ by his students because of his strict insensitive nature.
- One of his pupils, Taplow was given the overload of work because he was absent in Harris’s class due to his sickness. As when he asked Mr. Harris that whether he had been given retreat, the reply of Harris that Taplow was given what he deserved made Taplow call him hardly human.
