Why did tea plantation not succeed beyond darjeeling in himalayas?

The British planters developed tea fields all along the Shivliks and Lessr Himalya from Assam to Himachal Pradesh, in effect they did not succeed beyond the Darjeeling region because of several geographical, economic and cultural reasons .
