The 3 American soldiers had lost their battalion and were wandering about in the forest when they came upon the narrator’s cottage. One of the soldiers was wounded by gunshot and the remaining 2 American soldiers were exhausted and wanted some help.
On the other hand, the German corporal and his 3 soldiers had lost their regiment and visited the narrator’s house to seek some shelter till daylight.
