The Ancient mariner killed the Albatross as it was associated with the luck.

Explanation:

The Ancient Mariner thought that the wind was blowing because of the birds. They also thought that the birds where the good sign of luck.

But on day the wind was not blowing, so they thought that the wind died because of birds and started to kill the birds. The sailors cheered the ancient mariner for killing the birds.
