All the sailors and the mariner were superstitious. They believed that the albatross brought 'em good luck. When the bird spoke to the Mariner as a friend, he killed it immediately. In the end it seems like the mariner remained alive only because of killing the albatross

The mariner was jealous that the Albatross was getting more attention that he was, all of his crew members were paying more attention to the bird than they were him. His need for people to pay attention to him is somewhat ironic seeing as later in the story he ends up needing someone to pay attention to him or else he suffers through tremendous pain.
