Hey Mate
The ancient mariner stopped the wedding guest because he wanted to confess his sin. He wanted to explain an incident when they reached the land of snow and ice. There was no hope. But then suddenly an albatross came which gave them a way to escape from that horrible place.
Everyone considered it as a good omen and they hailed it in God's name. Then suddenly one day the mariner killed the bird without any reason due to a fit of meaningless anger.
He regretted so much that he wanted to confess in front of someone. That was the time when he saw the wedding guest..

Answer:
In the poem 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the ancient mariner wanted to confess his sin to someone. He stopped the wedding guest to listen to his tale as the guest was transfixed by his hypnotic gaze and was, thus, left with no option but to listen to his tale.
