In India, the perception of the singer-songwriter displayed itself in its comprehensive manner which was known as the Bhakti movement. The firm caste system, the complex ritualism that established the method of worship and the natural requirement to move to a more fulfilling manner of devotion and assurance perhaps encouraged this movement.

Bhakti poets featured submission to god. Equally, many of the Bhakti saints were revolutionaries who chose to challenge the currents of their time through their comments. The Bhakti tradition continues in a transformed variant even in the present day.

The movement apparently originated in the Tamil region around the 6th and 7th century AD and accomplished a great deal of prevalence through the songs of the Alvars and Nayanars, the Vaishnavite and Shaivite writers. Recognizing from both high and low classes, these minstrels conceived a formidable body of research that firmly entrenched itself in the traditional literature.
