Why did the boy in thank you ma'am not run away though he found the door open?

Roger was a theif who attempted to snatch mrs.Jones' purse. But he was caught by her. She dragged him home. She made him wash his dirty face. She also shared her humble meal with him. She left the door open and her purse on the day bed to show Roger that she trusted him to do the right thing. Roger could run away from there easily. But he did not do so. As mrs. Jones trusted him,he did not want to be mistrusted by her. He felt that he must honour her trust. That is why he didnot try to run away though he had an opportuinity to do so.
