The boys and the narrator not spoke during their journey back home because the narrator knew their secret but he didn't want to reveal it so he sealed his lips.

And the boys thought that the narrator didn't know about their secret so they acted as if they had went for their "plans".Moreover they didn't want to tell narrator about their condition.
